Abstract

The inselberg landscape (Inselberglandschaft) as described by Bornhardt (1900) has also been called the ‘savanna landscape’; and the concept of a ‘savanna cycle’ has been introduced in an attempt to explain its origin (Cotton, 1942(a)). This landscape type, which is common in the tropics, is characterised by a great extent of very smooth, nearly level plains which are flooded in the wet season. From the plains inselbergs rise abruptly, forming very steep-sided isolated hillocks and hills, even mountains, of more or less bare rock.
