Abstract

The concept of an average distance that a molecule travels between collisions (a mean free path) is not required in the rigorous transport theory of the classical perfect gas but remains a useful concept at the more elementary level adopted in this chapter. The mean free path is well defined for a gas of elastic spheres but requires more careful consideration when the more realistic model of a molecule as a scattering potential is used.
