Abstract

Behaviour modification as a clinical strategy has gained in popularity over the past 15 years, especially in the USA. During the past 4 years we have exclusively used behavioural techniques in our clinical work. We have necessarily had to learn many of the practical skills, through a process of trial and error, using American texts to provide the basic knowledge. This text summarises the skills which we have thus acquired, and is written in an attempt to relieve others from a similarly protracted method of learning. The behavioural techniques described are within the capacity of all those who work with children, whether they are teachers, doctors, nurses, social workers or psychologists.
