Abstract

This chapter considers the contributions of the transport sector to the UK economy. As a preliminary, it is first necessary to define ‘transport sector’. This is done on the imperfect basis, which is subsequently qualified, of transport manufacturing and transport operations. Posts and telecommunications are generally included in the latter, mainly because of difficulties in distinguishing transport and communications separately in data sources; however, their inclusion also helps to emphasise the substitution possibilities between physical movement and telecommunications.
