Abstract

Fewer than 10% of all surgical patients receive blood. Most patients undergoing surgical procedures do not need blood transfusion, provided that blood loss is less than 11 and the patient receives an adequate volume replacement with crystalloid and/or colloid solutions. When blood loss is more extensive, replacement with blood should be given as early as possible, to provide oxygen-carrying capacity as well as volume expansion.
