The Economic Environment

  • Chapter
British Social Trends since 1900

Abstract

Statistics on the level of income and wealth in the United Kingdom aim to present an overall picture of the economy in terms of frequently used concepts. The precise meaning of these concepts is not always clear; in Section 1 of this chapter the various statistics and concepts used later are therefore defined. Section 2 describes the sources of the statistics presented and some of the problems which may prevent straightforward interpretation. Section 3 summarises the main trends in the statistics.
