Abstract

This is to detect at an early stage inadequate fetal oxygenation, either antenatally or intrapartum, thus anticipating an abnormal outcome for the neonate and enabling the obstetrician to intervene and deliver the baby before permanent damage is done. It is hoped that in this way fetal heart rate monitoring will reduce intrapartum asphyxia and stillbirths.
