Abstract
In April 1827 Heine visited England. It was a country which, he felt,
consisted of great extremes, of opulence and impoverishment, orthodoxy and disbelief, freedom and slavery, cruelty and mild temperament, honesty and cheating — with a grey misty sky overhead, the sound of machines from all sides, figures, gaslights, chimneys, newspapers, jugs of port, tight-lipped people.
