Abstract
Mao Zedong [Mao Tse-tung] (1893–1976) led the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in its revolutionary struggle pre-1949 and was pre-eminent in the post-revolutionary leadership for most of the period from Liberation (1949) until his death. The degree to which Mao personally dominated China’s post-revolutionary development is illustrated by the dramatic changes that have occurred since his death. It seems reasonable to speak of a ‘Maoist model’ to characterize China’s development path for much of the period from 1949 to 1976.
