The Behaviour of Maintained Systems

Abstract

It is customary to consider two types of maintenance: corrective and preventive maintenance. Corrective maintenance is concerned with repair actions after a failure has occurred (although if the system contains redundancy the system may not have failed). Preventive maintenance is that concerned with preventing failures (before they occur) by replacement before wear-out, regular oiling etc. Normal maintenance activities will usually consist of both types of maintenance work.
