Thatcherism and Industrial Relations

  • Chapter
The New Politics of British Trade Unionism

Abstract

As Rod Rhodes and I have argued elsewhere, Thatcherism is a diffuse phenomenon (Marsh and Rhodes, 1990; Marsh and Rhodes, 1991). In fact, we identified five broad dimensions of Thatcherism in the literature: an economic dimension; an electoral dimension; an ideological dimension; a policy style dimension; and a policy agenda/outcome dimension. This is not the place to rehearse these distinctions. However, it is clear from our analysis that relatively little attention has been given to the question of policy change.
