Abstract

A number of significant institutional, political and economic changes have taken place in the USSR, Eastern Europe and China in recent years: perestroika in the USSR; abolition of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (CMEA) and termination of the barter system in trade among the countries of Eastern Europe; German unification; economic reform in China; and development of separatist fervour in the USSR and Yugoslavia.
