Part of the book series: Institute of Latin American Studies Series ((LASS))

Abstract

The aim of this chapter is to explore the consequences for income distribution in Latin America of the new trade regime (NTR), which almost all governments in the region implemented during the 1980s in reaction to the perceived failure of the import substitution strategy of industrialisation and the need to recover investor credibility in the wake of the debt crisis.

I am very grateful to Miguel Székely for his assistance with data col?lection and to members of the Study Group for perceptive comments on two earlier drafts of this chapter.
