Abstract

The cocoa pioneer front in Ecuador was strongly influenced by the nature of the country’s incorporation into the world economy. According to Arrighi (1979, 161–2) this process can be ‘nominal’ or ‘effective’. The first occurs when incorporation does not change the dominant patterns of production and reproduction in the newly incorporated territory. The second takes place when these patterns are transformed. Arrighi further distinguishes two kinds of ‘effective’ incorporation. It is ‘peripheral’ if the increase in the density and connectedness of the networks linking the territory to the capitalist ‘centrel’ is greater than the development of the networks linking units of production within the territory itself. It is ‘non-peripheral if the opposite is the case. Ecuador became part of the world economy in 1840, but until around 1890 this was a clear case of ‘nominal’ incorporation. The period from c. 1890 to c. 1925, in contrast, is best conceptualised as ‘peripheral’ incorporation.
