Abstract
Sociologist Mats Hilte (1990, p. 57) found that 57 per cent of the problematic consumers at the treatment centres he studied had ‘not grown up with their biological parents. Most of them were raised by one parent, usually the mother (sometimes with a step parent). By the age of 16, approximately 14 per cent of those interviewed, had been placed in foster homes or institutions.’ These results are similar to those found in other major studies, i.e. UNO-79 (a nationwide study of problematic consumption in Sweden) and BAK/SWEDATE (the most comprehensive evaluation of Swedish treatment centres thus far).
