The Politics of Ethnic Consciousness

Abstract

Twenty-five years have elapsed since Barth (1969) published Ethnic Groups and Boundaries, a period during which spectacular developments in native ethnicity caused the United Nation’s General Assembly to proclaim 1993 International Year for Indigenous Populations. These developments cannot be ignored by any critical analysis of the anthropology of ethnicity. They were no accident but rather the culmination of concerted efforts by both indigenous political organizations and Western non-governmental organizations. These efforts have led to international recognition by the major nation-states of the specificity and importance of the ‘native problem’ (Morin 1992c).
