Pressure sores

  • Chapter
Pressure Sores

Summary

Pressure sores represent a complex form of wounding where many factors are responsible for the production of the final lesion. Often there is a failure to recognise the patient at risk or to provide the correct resources for their prevention. The Type 1 sore is produced by sustained pressure. The Type 2 sore is caused by endothelial cell damage with platelet thrombosis, and occurs in very ill patients. The factors which potentiate both types of sore are a diminution of cardiac output, a failure in the peripheral vasculature, an alteration in the quality of the blood reaching dependent areas and a deterioration in the tissue substrate.
