Men of Tragic Destiny: Ludendorff and Groener

  • Chapter
A Wreath to Clio

Abstract

Germany is perhaps the only country in which in modern times the military caste has exercised a predominant influence in the political sphere and in which eminent soldiers have played a leading role in the formulation of both foreign and internal politics. In the main this has been to her ultimate detriment and the story of this military participation in politics is fraught with irony and tragedy. As in every story there are good and bad elements, heights of victory were reached and moments of nobility attained, but there were also depths of malfeasance and astounding instances of broken faith.
