Abstract

The statistical data published in the 1960 Population Census Report of Thailand is the most important single document on the demographic patterns of that country. The Census tabulates data for the whole Kingdom and by individual changwads (provinces). It has been evaluated to be the most accurate and informative of all enumerations to date1, but reservations have been expressed regarding certain aspects2. Nevertheless, the report provides for the first time detailed information on inter-changwad changes of residence for the quinquennium prior to the Census date, 25 April 1960. (Data on changes of residence are published as Table 6: Migration of population 5 years of age and over, in Thailand Population Census, 1960, Whole Kingdom and Changwad Series.) It is the purpose of this study to introduce a method of analysing this type of population movement data and to present some preliminary conclusions on the spatial pattern of internal redistribution in Thailand.
