Abstract

In this chapter we will build on ideas introduced earlier in the book, notably the idea of chemical potential, and its relevance to a discussion of phase transitions (following section 11.1). We shall extend the concept of the ensembles (section 12.2) to discuss the grand canonical ensemble and an approach to open systems. These ideas come together to discuss simple chemical reactions and conditions for chemical equilibrium.
