Beyond water, humans need food, fiber, energy, and shelter to survive. Agriculture — the generation of many of the products that satisfy these needs from plants and animals — was the primary land use considered in The Future of Arid Lands (Chapter 7). As noted elsewhere, it was argued even in 1956 that this view of the potential uses of drylands was far too restricted.
