Abstract
We report a type of planar metamaterials that can support a high-quality factor resonance mode, namely trapped-mode, excitation of which is polarization insensitive. The strong energy density of electromagnetic field between metallic pat terns of the metamaterial structures shows the potential for development of spaser (surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) and related novel photonics.
