Abstract
It was not until the early 1990s that psychosocial intervention (PSI) training courses began to be developed which were accessible to mental health staff who worked in routine practice settings. These courses were welcomed by clinicians eager to increase their clinical skills and become more effective in their work with seriously mentally ill (SMI) people. In addition to this enthusiasm from the professions there were also calls from policy-makers to make this training in evidence based practice more widely available (Onyett, et al. 1995; Department of Health, 1994, 1996, 1999). In order to meet the demand for training many new PSI courses have been established around the UK with a total of 32 courses at diploma level or above being identified in a recent survey (Brooker and Evans, 1998).
