Abstract

One of the most common reasons to deploy a Linux host is to provide mail services including receiving and sending e-mail and retrieving e-mail via mechanisms like Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and Post Office Protocol (POP3). In this chapter, we’ll briefly explain how e-mail works, and we’ll introduce you to the component parts of an e-mail solution, including

  • MTAs, or Mail Transfer Agents: The servers that send and receive e-mail

  • MUAs, or Mail User Agents: Clients through which your users send and receive e-mail

  • MDAs, or Mail Delivery Agents: Tools that help you deliver e-mail to mailboxes
