Abstract
Why was Japan able to sustain rapid economic growth for nearly 20 years? There is no single reason. Various factors, ranging from general background to economic policies, have been analyzed. This chapter deals with Japan’s general background, government policies, and some reasons for the rapid economic growth. For the government policy, we examine macroeconomic planning of the Economic Planning Agency (EPA), the industrial policy carried by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), and last, foreign economic policy.
