Numerical Analysis for a Cylinder

  • Chapter
Cure of Thermosetting Resins

Abstract

Perhaps only a few kinds of cylindrical parts are usually prepared in industry by using thermosets. Generally, solid cylinders or hollow cylinders and tubes are made of elastomers. However, this kind of shape is of great interest for all materials for at least two reasons:

  1. 1.

In the calorimetry technique, the small sample size used necessitates that all ingredients in the sample are well dispersed. Dispersion problems do arise on occasion and are generally observed by lack of reproducibility in calorimetric curves. The question which always arises is how representative is a small sample taken from a large batch of the homogeneity of the batch. This is the reason why samples up to 150–200 mg are used, the resin being located in a hollow cylinder.

  2. 2.

Cylindrical samples and moulds, either of long length or of finite length can. be studied easily, for instance by recording the temperature on the longitudinal axis of the cylinder.
