Distributed Multiple Description Coding

Abstract

To design the MDC, the difficult point is that different from the traditional single-description coding, the latter only needs to consider the rate distortion function of two variables \( R(D) \), but the former (in the circumstance of two descriptions) should take comprehensive consideration of the five elements’ function \( ({R_1},{R_2},{D_0},{D_1},{D_2}) \). On the one hand, if according to the traditional single-description method to optimize the design of the two single-channel transmission rate \( {R_1},{R_2} \) and single-channel distortion \( {D_1},{D_2} \), then the synthesis of the two descriptions of the two-way transmission rate \( {R_1} + {R_2} \) and dual distortion \( {D_0} \) can hardly be an optimized encoding scheme. On one hand, if according to the traditional single-description method to make the transmission rate \( {R_1} + {R_2} \) and dual distortion \( {D_0} \) to achieve optimum design, then the descriptions divided by the bit stream \( {R_1} + {R_2} \) are hard to achieve optimum design. The realization scope of the five elements’ function \( ({R_1},{R_2},{D_0},{D_1},{D_2}) \) has the following restraints:

$$ {D_0} \geq D({R_1} + {R_2}) $$
(2.1)
$$ {D_1} \geq D({R_1}) $$
(2.2)
$$ {D_2} \geq D({R_2})$$
(2.3)
