Abstract

For all the research activity in systems, one tends to think of the basics in systems areas as well-understood. Neither programming languages, nor database systems, nor compilers can be considered new disciplines. Language paradigms, relational databases, and compiler construction, for example, have been part of undergraduate syllabi for years.
