Abstract
The important neuromuscular action of the larynx is that of opening and closing the vocal cords. Some of the anatomical and physiological aspects of this action are described in Chapters 1, 3 and 5. From the clinical point of view, any disturbance of this process is observed as a failure of movement of the vocal cord. Paralysis of some or all of the muscular activity of cord movement leads to a variety of fixed positions of the vocal cords—the details of which have been debated by laryngologists. Agreement has now been reached that there are essentially two positions of fixation which either or both cords may adopt.
