Part of the book series: Applied Mathematical Sciences ((AMS,volume 50))

Abstract

This monograph presents a theory of the propagation of transient sound waves in plane stratified fluids whose densities ρ(y) and sound speeds c(y) are functions of the depth y. The main goal of the theory is to calculate the signals produced by prescribed localized sources and to determine their asymptotic behavior for large times. The results include criteria for the occurrence of acoustic ducts that trap a portion of the signal and cause it to propagate horizontally.
