Abstract

The single-particle properties of the electron-atom and nucléon-nucleus systems can be accurately reproduced with the help of a one-body“mean field.” It is shown that many one-body potentials exist which all reproduce the single-particle elastic scattering wave function. Among these potentials, the self-energy plays a privileged role, because it also yields information on the single-particle properties of the bound states.
