Abstract
Non-invasive techniques offer the greatest promise to get detailed information about flows in a wide variety of situations. Two techniques - Laser Doppler Velocimetry (LDV), Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV)- to measure flows are described in this paper. These have been selected because of their ability to obtain detailed, accurate measurements in a wide range of flow situations. These techniques do not depend on the properties of the flow medium and have the ability to obtain both temporal and spatial information. In addition, while the LDV technique is primarily used in statistically stationary flows, the PIV technique has the unique ability to examine transient flows. The ability of the techniques to analyze practical flow problems is demonstrated through results from sample measurements. Finally, the need to examine the nature of the scatterers in the flows to be analyzed have been pointed out to be the key to measurement success.
