Abstract

We know more today about the safety of oral contraceptives (OC) than about any other medication. Because millions of healthy women use OC for extended lengths of time, the health effects become an important public health concern. After three decades of extensive study, investigators have demonstrated that OC, when given to healthy women, protect against unwanted pregnancy and its complications, improve health, and may even prolong life (1–5).
