Abstract

Follicular atresia is most likely a process involving several molecules and, perhaps, the ratios between them. There is evidence that the process may be influenced by a receptor capable of binding gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH). It has been reported that GnRH has direct effects on the rat ovary (1–4). Together, these and other reports support the conclusion that receptors capable of binding and mediating a response to GnRH exist in the rat ovary and that a GnRH-like molecule might play a role as an atretogenic factor in the ovary.
