Mechanisms of Neutrophil Emigration

Abstract

Neutrophils adhere to endothelium by neutrophil-dependent or endothelial-dependent mechanisms (1). The neutrophil-dependent mechanism operates when the neutrophil is directly stimulated by activating agents such as bacterial chemotactic peptides, complement fragments, or tumor necrosis factor/cachectin (TNF). Neutrophil-dependent adherence is mediated by the interaction of neutrophil CD11b/CD18 (Mac-1, Mol) and endothelial intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) (2).
