Abstract

When the Odum brothers arrived at Enewetak in 1954 to do the research that resulted in their widely cited paper on the trophic structure and productivity of a windward coral reef (Odum and Odum 1955), both ecosystem science and coral reef ecology were in their infancy. Thanks to the Odums’ extraordinary efforts during their short sojourn in the Marshall Islands, and to their prolific careers, we have seen a marked growth in interest in ecosystem science and in the study of reef ecology. In that context, this chapter considers the role of ecosystem science in assessing the cycling of essential elements in coral reefs.
