Alcoholism: A Low-Risk Risorder for Chinese? Community Surveys in Taiwan

Abstract

There have been few well-designed surveys of alcoholism in Taiwan. An epidemiological survey was conducted during 1946 and 1948 and a study in 1984 on the prevalence of alcoholism in selected Taiwan Chinese communities. There were only two cases of alcoholism (0.1%) identified in the early study (7). The finding led to the conclusion that alcoholism is rare among Chinese. Several different factors have been proposed to account for the low incidence of alcoholism among Chinese. For example, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH-I) deficiency has been suggested as a possible cause of the low occurrence of alcohol problems (5, 28). Other factors that may affect alcohol problems may be the drinking behavior of the Chinese e.g., drinking alcohol primarily at meals and ceremonial occasions, and the relatively small number of bars (11, 18, 23, 24, 27).
