Abstract

Lymphadenopathy Associated Virus (LAV) was isolated from T-cultured lymphocytes of a homosexual man with lymphadenopathy syndrome (LAS) in 1983. Since then, it has been repeatedly isolated from AIDS patients belonging to different risk groups: homosexual, haemophiliac, Haitian and Zairian. We present here the results of the detection of IgG antibodies to LAV by ELISA, in patients with AIDS or AIDS related diseases compared to different control groups. First, we show the high seropositivity in both French AIDS patients (75%; 67/90) and French LAS patients (90%; 99/110). Very similar results were obtained from sera of American AIDS or LAS patients. Second, we present the results in 3 groups of haemophiliacs under different treatment. The last part concerns seroepidemiological results in Zairian AIDS patients: 88% LAV-ab-positive (32/36) compared to the control groups. The high prevalence of IgG antibodies to LAV in AIDS patients provides strong evidence for the role played by the virus in AIDS.
