Monoclonal Antibodies in Cancer

Part of the book series: Contemporary Biomedicine ((CB,volume 6))

Abstract

Seventeen thousand Americans develop renal cancer annually. At the time of diagnosis, 30% have metastatic disease demonstrable by conventional radiologic or nuclide imaging techniques. Of the remaining patients who are ostensibly surgically curable, about 40% have micrometastatic disease that will later manifest itself. Currently no effective method exists for detection of micrometastatic disease. Likewise, no effective systemic therapy exists and these patients will die of their disease.
