Abstract

Membranes of eucaryotic cells contain glycoproteins and consequently their biosynthesis is of great interest. It is well established that lipid intermediates of dolichol type are obligatory in the assembly of the N-glycosidicly linked oligosaccharide chains (Struck & Lennarz, 1980; Dallner & Hemming, 1981). Membranes, and to a great extent secretory proteins, are glycosylated; a process involving lipid intermediates. The role of glycosylation in the biosynthesis of cell membranes has stimulated interest in the dolichol lipid intermediates during the last ten years.
