Abstract
Initiation of translation of mRNA into protein consists of a series of discrete reactions during which the ribosomal subunits interact with mRNA and with initiator tRNA in such a way that the ribosome binds at a specific site of an mRNA that contains the initiator codon AUG or GUG corresponding to the beginning of a cistron. During this process the initiator tRNA is also positioned on the ribosome by base-pairing between the anticodon of the initiator tRNA and the initiation codon of mRNA. Several specific proteins called initiation factors and GTP direct the various steps leading to the formation of a functional ribosomal chain initiation complex.
