Abstract
The physician is made constantly aware of the delicate therapeutic balance between cure and complication—the risk of treatment against the gain of control of disease. To achieve the maximum cure rate in the treatment of malignant disease it is necessary to accept a certain number of complications. To realize the optimum therapeutic balance it is necessary to attempt full eradication of the tumor while simultaneously maintaining the rate of complication at an acceptable minimum. Even under the best of circumstances some injury to normal surrounding tissues is inevitable (1).
