Abstract
In 1978 the American Society for Clinical Nutrition, through the action of its then-president, Dr. Jules Hirsch, and its Council, formed a working group to examine the nature and the strengths of the scientific evidence relating the patterns of our national diet to the genesis of disease. It was mandated that recommendations not be made by this group, but that it confine its attention strictly to the evidence.
