Abstract
In conducting the field work to construct the gradient model, Glacier National Park was divided into three geographic units (Fig. 6.1). Area A is the old West Lakes district; it includes that portion of the park west of the Continental Divide, from the Canadian border south to and including the Lincoln drainage (the next major drainage south of the McDonald drainage). Its total area is about 160 000 ha. This was the original study area in Glacier; vegetation sampling was conducted in this area from 1972 through 1974. Fuel sampling was conducted in this area during 1974 and 1975. The results, analyses, conclusions, and incorporation of these data into the gradient model are the subject of Chapters 7–12.
