Abstract
In her thoughtful discussion, Professor Clements exaggerates our disagreement by considering topics I did not discuss. I confined my discussion to relations between individual primary-care physicians and individual patients without a life-threatening disease. Consequently, I made no claims about, nor do I wish to here pursue, what she calls “stand-in situations,” patients who are terminally ill or have seriously life-threatening diseases, policy analysis for the allocation of health resources, or professional self-regulation with respect to health policy, research, or academic freedom.
