Abstract
A 2-year-old girl is brought to a small rural emergency room at ten o’clock at night by her babysitter who found her in the bathroom with an open unlabeled container of her grandfather’s heart pills. The general pediatrician on call for the ER needs to identify the pills, determine what diagnostic workup is necessary, and initiate appropriate treatment. If unswallowed pills are unavailable the pediatrician might try to contact the grandfather’s physician to determine what medications he is taking. In the future, the pediatrician might access the grandfather’s electronic medical record through emergency override.
