The Confident Lion

Abstract

Dorothy and her friends walked farther along the Building Block Road. The two complementary plains of position and activity were soon left behind, and once more their path passed through a wood. This wood was more densely grown than the last. The trees crowded thick together, and the track between them was dark and vaguely menacing. Dorothy felt an irresistible urge to chatter, as though this might somehow counter the forbidding atmosphere. “I am sure it will be interesting when we reach the Wizard and hear all about quarks and things. I have always wondered about them.” This was in fact a lie. She had never heard of them before, but it seemed necessary to say something to break the threatening silence.
