Abstract

Because of the direct relationship between the efficacy of alcohols and other anesthetics with their oil/water partition coefficients, most research concerning the mechanism of action of ethanol has focused on the disruptive effects of the alcohol on the molecular order in the interior of neuronal and model membrane systems. The observed changes are, however, small and alone cannot explain the total pharmacological actions of alcohols1. Recent studies have shown that ethanol and other anesthetics not only interact with the interior of the membrane but also interact with the surface domain2–6.
