Abstract
A logically integrated database is at the heart of an integrated network management system, providing the interface between all functions of the network management system. The database management system which controls and administers this database must provide the needed level of performance to the various functions. Real time data collection from devices and subnetwork management systems, analysis functions and interactive transaction processing for administrative functions must all be supported. The database must be distributed both locally and geographically. We surveyed the available database management systems and did extensive performance testing on seven relational database management systems. This paper details our ideas on the database management requirements for a network management system, with particular emphasis on the real time performance, and describes the performance testing we conducted.
