Abstract

Latency, the hallmark of Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is defined as long-term virus persistence in a clinically silent state with periodic episodes of overt disease caused by reactivated virus. The ability of the reactivated virus to replicate in the presence of apparently normal HSV-specific immunity has intrigued the students of HSV latency for many generations. This chapter reviews HSV immunity focusing on immunoregulatory events during latency and recurrent disease. Particular emphasis is placed on the role of immunosuppression and the definition of factors that govern its generation in response to secondary exposure to HSV antigen. HSV-mediated immunoregulatory events that might impact on infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and in the pathogenesis of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), are discussed.
